RE: Newbies to the RV World

Welcome to the world of 5ers. We have been rving for 5 years and I learn something from the forum everytime that I read it and that is almost every day. You would be surprised but I bet you have a lot to add to the forum today. We have all learned little tricks that can help others.

RE: Help??question winterize/city water connection

I have had this happen before, usually due to pushing in on the check valve stem with pressure on the system. Go to the back side of the valve and unscrew the hose from the valve. You should be able to see the back of the valve. When it has happened to me the "O" ring has come off of the keeping the check valve from sealing. Takes just a couple of minutes to pop it back on and be operational. Good Luck and hope you enjoy your winter down south.

RE: We need a mattress

Like a previous post, we also purchased a down topper for our mattress. While the mattress was just "ok" the addition of the down topper really made it quite comfortable. When we got back from our last 4 week trip we had trouble getting comfortable with our "very good" home mattress.

RE: forest river

We have a 2005 29LRLBS Cedar Creek by Forest River and have been very happy. Just a few minor problems but the overall workmanship has been very good. The couple problems that we have had have been taken care of by the dealer. I am not familiar with the model in your post and there are several lines within the Forest River Company. Good luck with your choice.

RE: Just Received My New Trailer Registration; WOW!

In Indiana we pay a license fee (~$40) and a personal property tax on our RV. We have a 2005 Cedar Creek 29LRLBS and the taxes are now a little over $500/year. That is down from $750/year when it was new. They treat it just like a house since it is fully self contained.

RE: Screen Door Mod

Good idea, This may be something I will try to do to our Silverback.

RE: Winterize

Bob I will try to add my 2 cents worth to your questions. First, on the depressurizing the city water hook-up, Once you have antifreeze throughout the system, and the pump off, you should open a faucet to relieve pressure from the system. Once done you can pull the screen (if you have one) out of the city water hook-up. You should be able to see a small rod behind it. This is your city water check valve. Carefully push it in until pink antifreeze comes out. This will make sure the city water portion of your system is protected. Secondly, if you are putting antifreeze in your fresh water tank to be pumped throughout the system it may take several gallons of antifreeze to reach a level high enough to be picked up by the pump. The way to use less antifreeze is to see if you have a winterizing kit on your pump. This will allow you to pump antifreeze directly from the bottle. If you do not have the kit installed they are easy to add or you dealer could do it for you. Thirdly, the previous post is right. Do not try and fill the hot water heater with antifreeze. The point of the bypass valve is to not put antifreeze in the heater. Just pull the plug and drain. Good Luck

RE: magnetic maps

My states map is also a sticker. Have not seen the magnetic type. I did not want to permanently mount the map to my 5er so I put it on a piece of plexi-glass and velcroed it inside on one of the picture windows. Makes it easy to remove to update. We got our map at Camping World but have also seen them at Wal-Mart. Good Luck

RE: Fifth wheel security

About 1 year ago we had someone get into our 5er and steal the DVD. Our 5er was sitting in our driveway and we were home at the time of the theft. We were dumb enough to go into the unit that day and had not locked the door when we finished. We found a infrared driveway alarm that is wireless and has a range of 400 ft. I mounted the sensor on the under edge of the kitchen counter facing the entry door. The receiver is in the house. It works great and have not had any problems, of course we are also making sure that we lock the door when not around. These driveway alarms can be found at Harbor Freight for approx. $20.

RE: wheel bearings

I have my bearings repacked each year (average about 5000 miles). I have used the packer many times and it is much easier to use. When using it, do not just use the new grease to push out the old grease. The bearing needs to be completly cleaned first. You can use any parts cleaner or brake cleaner. Do not use gasoline. Besides being dangerous, it also can leave a residue that may breakdown the new grease.

RE: Fifth Wheel Skeleton

That was the coolest video of building from scratch. I envy those kind of skills. Back to the original post, the best thing to do is go the a manufacturer for a tour. I have been to a couple of plants and it is always amazing and enlightning.

RE: Still can't post signature picture

I kept having the same problem then found that I was trying to insert a picture that was to big. Once i got it down to 100 pixels in height it worked just fine. Their error message is not very descriptive and would lead you to believe that it is a problem with their computer. Hope this works for you too. :)

RE: All that space in the basement and no AC Outlet - Fixed

Great comments on a plug in the basement. This is something that should have been taken care of by the manufacturer. I have a Cedar Creek and if I had known it was something that they would have added on for $25 I would have asked for it. Seems like something they would just do. Great idea about adding yuor ow and I will be looking in my basement for a place to tap in.

RE: Winterize Black Flush

Like the previous posts, I to blow out the flush line. I also drain the black water tank after I have winterized the water system. This makes sure that the water that went into the black water and grey water tanks is out of the system. I then put about 1/2 gal of anti-freeze into each tank to keep the seals wet. I may be committing overkill but it is a small price to pay to prevent a possible future problem.

RE: mountain travel

I agree with the other posts. I made the trip from the west a couple years ago pulling a Cedar Creek 29ft with a F-250 Diesel. No problems at all. I had worried for 24 hrs before that part of the trip that it would be difficult but my concerns were put to rest and the rig performed flawlessly. Have a great trip. That is a beautiful part of the country.

RE: 6 feet of water in the Mobile Suite

Let me say that our hearts go out to you and all those that have lost many of their belongings in Ike. I think that you will be much happier with a replacement unit. I will not even go into why, because only you knows what it is like to gather as much as you can and leave. I hope everything works our well for you. Our prayers are with you.

RE: Open Range

I don't want to be one to spread rumors but I believe that the Open Raod is manufactured by Pilgrim. I read that they have shut their doors. You may be able to get some confirmation from others.
